Our essence

In VAKIANO we contribute to the preservation of this tradition.

how to make a poncho

A ball of yarn goes in and out of hundreds of warp threads taut as tendons. A hand rescues it before it drops and sends it though again from the other side. The same hands firmly press the end of a weave with a rod. Thus, the action is repeated thousands of times for months until obtaining the final result.

LOOM

Argentina is the home of an ancient weaving tradition. There’s a device in every home the size of a grand piano. It is made of wood and It’s the LOOM. Sometimes they stand in outdoor yards or in rooms specially designed for them. They are tamed by the memory of the hands of fathers, mothers, children and grandmothers

inheritances

The loom is where desires, secrets, joys and sorrows of all those weavers are stitched together. It is a place where the earthly and the divine come together, a dialogue with oneself and with the stories of today and yesteryear told while the warp is put together. The woof of the ponchos ties together life cycles, inheritances, feelings, memories and thousands of tales which come to life again every time we wear them.

argentinian technique

Our curators select each poncho.
Vakiano's Argentine ponchos are handcrafted with all natural products and dyes. The Argentine poncho is made according to techniques passed down through generations. These Andean ponchos take between 1 to 4 months to weave due to the complexity of the loom work. They come from the north of Argentina.
